New this season
Rescheduling and Match defaults
Prime Time Booking: Mondays & Tuesdays at 5:00 PM
Teams Must Be Finalized Saturday Jan 10th
1. Teams Play at a Different Time Each Week
Based on player feedback, teams will play one match at 6pm one week, one match at 7pm one week and one match at 8pm one week across the round (not necessarily in that order).
For example, a player in Box 5, might play at 7pm for week 1 of the round, 8pm the following week, and 6pm the week after that. Please make sure you know what time you are playing each week.
As with last season, you may even play a different day each round depending on results.
2. Rescheduling and Match Defaults
If you are unable to play at your scheduled time, the following rules apply to ensure fair play and clear communication. Please refer to the Doubles House League Match Rescheduling Checklist.
a. Communication & Defaults
- Notify your opponents: The team unable to play must inform their opponents immediately.
- Consequences: Failure to communicate before the match starts will result in an automatic match default.
- Timeframe: All rescheduled matches must be played within the current round’s timeframe.
b. Responsibility for Reorganizing
The team that initiates the reschedule is responsible for:
- Finding a new time: Coordinating with the opposing team to find a suitable alternative.
- Booking the court: Securing the new court time. This includes contacting Jim if you wish to use the designated 5:00 PM House League slot on Mondays or Tuesdays.
c. Fair Play & Sportsmanship
If a suitable alternative time cannot be agreed upon, the team that was unable to play the original time will default the match.
The Pickering Squash Club is built on a foundation of good sportsmanship. We expect all members to make a genuine effort to accommodate their opponents and ensure matches are played whenever possible.
3. Substitution Policy
Our goal is to ensure every match is played and that every game remains competitive. We have updated our sub rules to make it easier for teams to find players and avoid defaults.
a. Choosing an Eligible Sub
To keep matches fair, please follow these eligibility rules:
- Who can sub: You may choose a sub from one box above your current box, or any box below your current box.
- Match Quality: Please try your best to find a sub with a similar skill level to the player they are replacing. This ensures a great game for everyone.
b. Finding a Substitute
Finding a sub is the responsibility of the team. To help you find a player:
- The Sub List: A list of available substitutes is typically provided at the start of each round.
- If you can’t find the list: If a current list is not available or hasn’t been sent out, please contact the Doubles Coordinator directly to request the latest contact information for substitutes.
c. Recording Your Sub (Mandatory)
It is the team’s responsibility to record who played in the match.
- Where to record: Clearly write the name of the substitute on the scoring sheet located on the corkboard outside the courts.
- Why this matters: If a sub isn’t clearly marked, it can lead to confusion in the standings and scoring errors.
d. Why We Prioritize Playing over Defaulting
We want to encourage all matches to be played when scheduled. When matches are defaulted, it impacts the level of play for the entire league and results in teams moving into boxes that don’t match their skill level. Playing a match with a sub is always preferred over a default.
4. Prime Time Booking: Mondays & Tuesdays at 5:00 PM
We have updated our booking rules for the 5:00 PM time slot on Mondays and Tuesdays to ensure all players have fair access to “Prime Time” courts.
Court 1: Managed by the Doubles Coordinator
Court 1 is primarily reserved for House League rescheduled matches. *
How to Book: All bookings for Court 1 at this time must be made through Jim (Doubles Coordinator). You cannot book this court through Gametime for this specific time slot.
- House League Deadline: Matches must be confirmed with Jim at least 24 hours in advance.
- Recreational Play: If no league match is confirmed 24 hours prior, the court will be released for recreational play.
- Important: To play on Court 1 during this time (even for recreational play), you must book it through Jim.
Court 2: Standard Booking (New for this Season)
Unlike Court 1, Court 2 is now available for standard booking.
- How to Book: Use the Gametime system as you would for any other court.
- Availability: This court is open to all members and is no longer reserved through Jim.
Priority & Fair Play Rules
To ensure a positive experience for everyone, we enforce the following “Prime Time” policies:
- No “Drop-in” Matches: House League teams may not use Court 1 unless they have a confirmed booking from Jim made at least 24 hours in advance.
- Confirmed Bookings are Final: If House League players do not book the court and Jim releases it to recreational players, the recreational players have full priority.
- Respecting Fellow Players: House League teams cannot ask recreational players to leave if the team failed to book the court through the proper channels. In this case, the league match must be rescheduled for a different time.
Why this matters: These rules prevent “Prime Time” courts from sitting empty and ensure that players who travel to the complex are not asked to leave the court unexpectedly.
5. Teams Must Be Finalized Saturday Jan 10th.
Scheduling, and publishing results takes time and is all done by volunteers as you probably know.
If you played in the previous season and there are no changes to your team, you are registered already. For teams that are new, have different partners, or for players who are not playing this season, please let Jim know by January 10th so we can finalize scheduling.
FAQs
Here are some common questions about Doubles and the Pickering Squash Doubles House League.
House League Format
We are moving to a box ladder format with a promotion and relegation system this season. (We hope you will be patient with us as we work out the bugs!)
What is a box ladder?
- Each team plays a round-robin against three other teams over a three-week round. Your final standing at the end of the round determines if you move up, move down, or stay in your current box for the next round.
- There will be four rounds this season.
- Matches are still best out of 5 games.
What is a round?
- A round consists of a three week period where each week you will play another team from your box in round-robin style. At the end of the round, the top team of each box moves up to the next box, while the lowest scoring team of the box above moves down (except for the upper and lower boxes where two teams might move up or down to ensure everyone has a variety of teams to play with.
- There will be four rounds this season.
Schedule
When will I find out when I’m playing?
The play format will be one match per week. Team rank will determine box number and scheduled playing times.
The schedule for each round will come out the Saturday before the next round starts. We know that’s not always a lot of time for people, but you can re-book your matches on your own if you are unable or unwilling to play within their scheduled times. Just make sure you play them before the round deadline date, otherwise your match gets recorded as a zero and it may affect your placement in the next round.
- Boxes 1 through 3
- Plays Monday nights
- Boxes 4 through 6
- Plays Tuesday nights
- Box 7
- Plays Wednesday nights
Do we have to play at the schedule times?
You are free to re-schedule your matches based on court availability any time before the round deadline date. Please make sure you let Jim know of any schedule changes so we can free up the courts.
How do I reschedule a match?
Please use this Doubles House League Match Rescheduling Checklist.
You can use Gametime to re-schedule your matches subject to court availability. Alternatively, You may arrange to play at 5pm on Monday or Tuesday through Doubles Coordinator (Jim) on a first-come-first served basis. The deadline to book the 500:pm time slot on Monday or Tuesday is 24 hours in advance. Otherwise we free up the time to allow members who like to play round-robin style games to play at this time.
A request may have been submitted, but the coordinator may not had time to get to it. Don’t count on playing during those times until you confirm with the Doubles Coordinator (Jim)
When do we have to play our matches by?
You must play and record all your matches before the round deadline date for the current round. There are no exceptions since the next round schedule is determined by scores. If you are unable to record your scores by the Round Deadline Date a 0/0 will be given for the match.
The Round Deadline Date can be found at the bottom of the schedule.
Could I be playing on a different night next round?
Depending on your results you could be playing a different time or a different night every three weeks. Keep in mind you can work with your opponents to reschedule matches if the night or time doesn’t work with you, subject to court availability. Just ensure you have playe d all your matches by the Round Deadline Date
The Round Deadline Date can be found at the bottom of the schedule.
Can I request to play on a different night?
We want as many people playing as we can arrange. So we have done our best to accommodate other conflicts with singles house league and OSDL the best we can at the start of the season. But based on the format and your team’s results, there is a high probability of team movement. You are free to re-schedule your matches based on court availability any time before the round deadline date. Please make sure you let Jim know of any schdule changes so we can free up the courts.
Schedule Conflicts and Subs
What if I can’t play a match?
Let your partner know as soon as possible. Decide between you whether you would rather re-scheudle your match or find a sub. If you want to re-schedule a match, reach out to your opponents to check for availability. Book your playing time through Gametime. Alternatively look on the schedule to see if there are any pale yellow openings – Jim handles bookings during club sanctioned house league time.
How do I find a sub?
Subs should be selected from the sub list first. We want to include as many people as possible in the house leagues, including those who are not playing regularly. If a sub is not available that you may choose a players from another team that plays in a box one above and all below your current box.
All subs must be recorded in the score sheets.
Teams are responsible for finding a sub if they cannot play. Everyone will be given a sub list by email at the beginning of the season. The league convenor is not responsible for finding you a sub. All subs who played for a team must be listed on the weekly score sheet in the doubles area.
What if both my parter and I can’t play a match?
You can contact your opponents and reschedule your match to be played before the Round Deadline Date. If you are unable to reschedule your match, then a default will be recorded awarding the win to the other team.
Each team must have at least one player that is part of the team playing in each match to qualify the match as an official house league match. Otherwise the match will be awarded to your opponents.
Ranking
How is my team ranked?
Each team will start with an initial placement. Throughout the session rankings are affected by wins and losses according to Squash Canada rules.
- Initial rankings are based on your previous performance with the consultation with our squash pro. These are some of the considerations that are taken into account when ranking:
- Past performance
- Court awareness
- Safety: do you make shots when you should call lets? Are you in line of a shot when you should have cleared?
- Skill and technique
- If you are new to doubles, we may take into account your singles level as well.
in January 2026, a new season will start. January start rankings will be based on previous season performance for existing teams. New teams will be ranked based on consultation and observation.
Don’t worry! If you feel you were placed too high or too low, you will have an opportunity to move up or down depending on your results.
Scoring
How many games and points do we play to?
- We play to 15 points. Unlike singles you do not have to win by 2 points.
- We play best out of five games for a match.
How do I record my team’s scores
- Paper score sheets will be posted on the cork board by the courts. The winners are responsible for filling the scores in, but either team may do it.
- Game scores must be recorded (best out of five games)
- Team are responsible for recording their game scores for all the three matches of the round before the round deadline dates. (We can’t add them past this date because the scores will determine matchups for the next round, so please ensure you or your team mates record them).
- Conveners will have to use 0/0 scores in the absence of scores.
- All subs must be recorded in the score sheets.
- Teams are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of recorded scores before Round Deadline Dates
